A fatal collision on the A14 caused major disruption after sections of the roadway were closed while emergency services responded to the serious incident.
According to Suffolk Police, the crash occurred on the westbound carriageway near Nacton and the Orwell Bridge area shortly after 9:00 a.m. on April 27, 2026. The collision involved a lorry and a silver Ford S-Max. Emergency crews, including ambulance teams and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service personnel, rushed to the scene following reports of the crash.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Ford S-Max died at the scene despite emergency response efforts. Two passengers traveling in the vehicle were taken to hospital for medical evaluation, though police later stated that their injuries were not believed to be serious.
Fire crews reportedly worked to free the lorry driver from the vehicle following the impact, highlighting the severity of the collision. A 50-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving as investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
The incident forced lengthy closures along portions of the A14 and Orwell Bridge, triggering severe congestion throughout Ipswich and surrounding Suffolk routes. Traffic delays extended onto the A12 and nearby diversion routes as thousands of motorists faced major disruption throughout the day.
Police appealed for witnesses and asked drivers with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision to contact investigators as the inquiry remains ongoing.
