rest in peace

SOUTHAMPTON, England — Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old first-year university student described by loved ones as intelligent, talented, and deeply loved, tragically died following a stabbing incident in Southampton on Wednesday night, December 3, 2025. Emergency services were called to Belmont Road in the Portswood area at approximately 11:30 p.m., where Henry suffered fatal injuries during an altercation while returning home from a night out.

Henry Nowak was a first-year Accountancy and Finance student at the University of Southampton, one of the United Kingdom’s Russell Group universities. Originally from Chafford Hundred in Essex, Henry had recently begun university life and was reportedly thriving academically and socially. Family members said he had excelled in his A-level examinations and quickly embraced campus life, joining two football teams while also working part-time at a local Morrisons store.

According to investigators, Henry had been celebrating the completion of his first semester with football teammates before the fatal incident occurred. Authorities stated he sustained multiple stab wounds, including a fatal chest injury, during the confrontation. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency responders arrived.

The case later drew national attention as court proceedings revealed details surrounding the incident. Prosecutors alleged that 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa fatally stabbed Henry during a confrontation on Belmont Road. During trial proceedings at Southampton Crown Court in May 2026, Digwa claimed he acted in self-defense after an argument escalated. The court heard that Henry suffered five stab wounds during the altercation.

Henry’s family released an emotional tribute remembering him as a beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin, teammate, and friend whose future was filled with promise and opportunity. They described him as “kind, intelligent, and talented,” saying their world would never be the same without him.

Friends and fellow students also paid tribute to Henry, remembering him for his warm personality, ambition, and ability to make friends wherever he went. Many described him as someone who embraced life fully and had quickly become a valued member of the university community despite only recently beginning his studies. Social media tributes and memorial messages continued spreading across Southampton and Essex following news of his death.

Hampshire Police confirmed multiple arrests were made during the investigation, including individuals accused of murder and assisting an offender. Detectives described the incident as isolated while continuing to appeal for witnesses and footage captured between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. in the Portswood and St Denys areas on the night of the attack.

As family, friends, classmates, and the wider community continue mourning the devastating loss, Henry Nowak is being remembered not for the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, but for the bright future, kindness, and positive spirit that defined his life at only 18 years old.
